If you have melasma, which means skin hyperpigmentation, then you’re not alone! This very common skin condition affects roughly six million people in the United States every year! Melasma is also more common in women than men.

What is melasma, exactly? It’s when excess melanin production leads to the formation of brown patches on the face. In can be due to excessive sun exposure, however there’s other contributors to the problem, including hormonal changes, excessive stress, toxins, thyroid problems and the use of birth control pills.

Often, melasma is mistaken for freckles or age spots. But brown spots on the face due to melasma are typically larger, darker and have irregular shapes.

We understand the want to get rid of melasma, so we’ve found this handy list of things you can do at home TODAY that will help reduce melasma spots on your face! There’s lots of great natural ingredients around the house that can assist with your anti-aging efforts.

1. Lemon Juice

What many people might not know about lemon juice is that it’s a natural skin lightener. Lemon has superb astringent properties, and the acidic nature also helps remove the outer layer of the skin, thereby eliminating a layer of hyper pigmented skin.

How to use – squeeze all the juice from one fresh lemon. Apply it to the affected area and gently rub it around for one to two minutes. Leave it on for 20 minutes before washing off.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

This acetic acid present in apple cider vinegar makes it a powerful bleaching agent, which helps remove spots and make the skin smoother and more radiant.

How to use – mix together equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water. Apply this solution to the melasma spots and allow it to air dry. Once dry, wash your face with lukewarm water and gently dry the skin.

3. Tumeric

Tumeric can also reduce the skin’s melanin and combat melasma. The active ingredient, curcumin, in turmeric spice has antioxidant and skin-lightening properties.

How to use – mix five tablespoons of turmeric powder with 10 tablespoons of milk to make a paste. If you can, use whole milk, as it has lactic acid and calcium which helps exfoliate and soften the skin. Additionally, add one tablespoon of gram flour to thicken the mixture. Then, apply the paste to the affected area. Allow the paste to dry for 20 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water and dry off.

4. Onion Juice

Onion juice is an effective home remedy to restore natural skin tone. Onion juice has a range of sulfur-containing compounds that are able to fade dark patches or discoloration of the skin. As well, onion juice provides nourishment to the skin cells.

How to use – finely chop up one to two onions. Place them on a piece of cheese cloth and squeeze to extract the juice. Measure the juice gathered and mix with an equal amount of apple cider vinegar. Apply this to the affected area with a cotton ball and leave on for 20 minutes.

5. Aloe Vera Gel

Due to the presence of mucilaginous polysaccharides in aloe vera, it can alleviate the hyperpigmentation and restore your skins natural color. It can also help to remove dead skin cells and promote regeneration of new cells.

How to use – buy pure aloe vera gel from your local retailer. Apply the gel thoroughly on the affected area and gently massage for one or two minutes. Leave the gel on for 15 to 20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.
