Is laser hair removal painful?

The experience is different for every individual client. The sensation is widely compared to the snap of a rubber band, or a pinch. Though most of our patients say the pain in tolerable and less painful than waxing, others more sensitive to the treatment can be prescribed an anesthetic cream.

Is there anything I should or should not do prior to my treatment?

Try to avoid sun exposure. The best results you will experience will be without a fresh tan. Do not wax, tweeze, thread or have electrolysis for 4 weeks before a treatment. You may shave or use creams during this period. On the day of your treatment we ask that you are freshly shaved.

What should be expected post-treatment?

It is completely normal to be a little red and bumpy in the area that had been treated. Here at the Laser Hair and Skin Centre we do not recommend any sun exposure or anything that can create any further heat to the area, as well as avoiding activities such as exercise, saunas, and other activities which may irritate the area or for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Aloe Vera cream or a good moisturizer is recommended as well and gently cleansing the area with mild soap as directed by your technician.

How many treatments will I need?

We explain to our clients that hair grows in cycles. The anagen (or growth phase) of hair contains the largest amounts of melanin and this phase is the laser’s target. From scientific studies we understand that any area contains a maximum of 20-30% of anagen hairs at one time, thus, these anagen hairs are affected each treatment. To have effective treatments it is imperative that they be sequenced. Every client’s expectations of hair loss are different. Some may be happy after a couple of treatments for a huge difference of hair reduction, or others may want to continue until there is virtually no more hair on the treated area. This is all up to the client- and how many treatments that are needed depends on every clients individual body as well.

How long should I wait between treatments?

Everyone is different in this category. Rule of thumb is area’s from the neck and above are 4-6 weeks and larger area’s such as legs, chest or back are 6-8 weeks. After your treatment your technician will be able to advice a plan for your individual needs.

What should I do to manage the hair between treatments?

Most don’t have much hair to manage in between treatments; but if so we recommend shaving or trimming.

Are the results permanent?

The equipment used here at the Laser Hair and Skin Centre is the LightSheer. These machines have been FDA approved for hair reduction and removal on all skin types. In order to get your desired results we recommend 4-6 treatments, depending on your individual case.

Does laser hair removal create or treat ingrown hairs?

Laser hair removal does not have effects of ingrown hairs, it does the exact opposite by treating them therefor, no more ingrown bumps!

Does the LightSheer work on different skin colors?

The LightSheer diode laser system is safe and effective to treat all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI). For darker skin types, the power of the machine is generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Our technicians are trained to know the appropriate adjustments to our machine depending on the skin type, so people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer when used properly.

Does the LightSheer work on tanned skins?

When your skin is tanned, this actually means your skin is damaged. A tan is “melanin” deposits in the skin, and the laser is attracted to melanin. The technology in the Lightsheer allows the skin to be cooled effectively to not traumatize the “tan” but the energy of the laser must be sufficiently reduced to accommodate any kind of tan. Therefore a client with a tan requires more treatments than someone without a tan. For best results, and to maximize the safety of our clients, we ask that you wait at least 6 weeks after a tan or sun/ultra violet exposure when coming to receive treatments here at the Laser Hair and Skin Centre.

What advantages does the LightSheer have over other laser hair removal systems?

Lasers operate at wavelengths or nanometers. Primitive lasers, such as the Alexandrite laser emits a wavelength of 755nm which is effective at targeting melanin in the hair and consequently the skin.
The LightSheer Diode Laser System was designed from the ground up specifically for laser hair removal only, so it has the wavelength, fluence, pulse width, and active epidermal cooling system (the ChillTip) suited for professional laser hair removal.
LightSheer manufacturers are the leaders in the laser hair removal industry, and here at the Laser Hair and Skin Centre we only offer the best Gold Standard Medical Grade equipment for the most trusted and effective results, so our clients can experience smooth skin in the fastest and safest manor available!!

Is the LightSheer Diode FDA approved?

The FDA cleared the device for treatments in December 1997. In April 1999, the FDA then granted it’s claim for permanent hair reduction after a study involving 3000 people proved that the LightSheer Diode had results of more than 50% permanent hair loss after only 3 treatments.

Why use the LightSheer Diode Laser System over the methods I've been using for years?

The LightSheer Diode Laser System’s design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling hand-piece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.
